The #CaseOfKraut contest winner has been chosen! Thank you to all who participated in the contest, competing for the glorious prize of an entire case of sauerkraut!
Dan Franke, a 61-year-old man from Chicago, proudly accepted the prize. He says he has loved sauerkraut from the first time he tasted it as a child at a local fundraiser. “It was heaven. I’ve loved it ever since.” Being of German descent, Dan says cabbage is part of his heritage.
It’s hard for Dan to choose a favorite dish with sauerkraut; “I like kielbasa and kraut, stuffed cabbage, golumpkies, and even just as a condiment.” Golumpkies, or Goląbkis, are Polish cabbage rolls familiar to Dan because his wife is Polish. He plans to share his winnings with family and friends after he cooks up a batch of stuffed cabbage.
Dan is also a stage four cancer survivor going on six years. He has had heart issues, which he says could be from eating too much red meat. “Getting more veggies in my diet is welcomed. My doctor would certainly praise the health benefits of sauerkraut.” Kraut is healthy and Dan believes it is “good for the soul.”
